Camera Obscura
What is a camera obscura?
A camera obscura is a dark room or box that can capture the outside world. One of the first steps of making a camera obscura is making a tiny pinhole so it can project the landscape around the box/room. However pinhole cameras project the landscape upside down. many photographers experiment with camera obscuras as it is a very well known technique among photographers and how to show different landscapes/projections.

How to make a camera obscura?
Firstly to make a camera obscura you have to light proof an area (box/room) by using a light proof material like black tape, black plastic or any other light proof material you have or have access to. in my experiment i used black tape to lightproof a small Pringles can. Then after making sure it is light tight you have to make a tiny pinhole so it can capture and project the photo. Although you need to make a seal where the pinhole is of light proof material to cover the pinhole so the photo isn't exposed for too long meaning you wouldn't get a good result from the experiment.

My pinhole photographs
The difference between the positive image and the negative is that they are both the inverted versions of each other. A negative image is when the highlights appear dark and the shadows appear light. However the positive images is what some would say the 'normal' version where the highlights are light and the shadows are dark. To invert my photos into negative and positive I used Photoshop. After I inverted it I thought that the light in the negative was too dark and you couldn't see much detail. So I changed the contrast of the grey a tiny bit until you could see more of the detail on each photo.
Justin Quinnell
justin quinnell is a pinhole photographer who is known for his unique style his experimental work has made his name known. justin quinnell is idolised by many young photographers as he is considered one of the worlds leading pinhole photographers. My first impression of his work is that most of it is out of focus, while doing my own pinhole experiment i also discovered that my photos weren't as focused or sharp as i expected. However i used photoshop to sharpen the edges.
Abelardo Morrell
My first impression of his work was that most of his photos are colourful or have a pop of colour that catches your eye and are very unique. I also thought that his style is very different from other photographers meaning that it stands
out. This is my favourite photo because I love the contrast in the red bed and the beautiful design of the head board that makes it look sort of dreamy. My first impression of this picture was that it looks very comfortable and that I would love to experience being there. Abelardo Morell's work is very eye catching and his style seems very formal. I really love his work and how he always finds the most impressive landscapes and contrasts. The photo shows a projection of Brooklyn bridge into a bedroom with a bed, bedside table, lamp, etc... |

Francis Bruguiere
My first impression of Francis Bruguieres work was that he focuses a lot on the shadows and tones of the photos and objects he is working with. This is my favourite image by him as it has many different interpretations of the meaning of light. in this photo it shows a light on the floor reflecting onto a blank wall.

When looking at Francis Brugiere's images, I was inspired to create my own interpretations. He works with light and shadow and various tones to create abstract images where the viewer is intrigued by what the subject matter could be or how the image was formed. I used scrunched up paper and colourful overlays on a source of light to create my photos. I experimented with different angles and crops of the subject matter to create abstract and graphic forms. When looking at my final images, I like the contrast and colours within the images and the varying shapes and shadows that the paper has formed. When I have put these images together I think they work really well as a series. To continue this work I could experiment using different coloured tissue paper over a light source to see what other effects I could achieve.
The above screenshots show some of the adjustments I tried in Photoshop to create more contrast in the photos. I experimented with the Unsharp Mask feature and also adjusting the levels. i have added these photos into the gallery above.
Light painting
|
In this video, a man explains what light painting is and how to do it. Light painting is a photographic technique where you use a longer exposure and a a moving light source. the exposure mode should be between 10 to 30 seconds giving time to make designs. light painting is a world wide technique which many photographers experiment with as it is very unique. There are many photographers who use lihght painting such as Susan Sims-Hillbrand

I decided to choose these photos because they stood out. To make these photos I went into the studio with a partner and firstly set up a camera on a tripod and manually made it in focus. Secondly, while in the studio we turned all the lights off so that you can see the light of the torch better. We chose a phone torch first which makes a thin white line in the photos. However to make the colourful photos we used a light box which you can change the settings to make it a varity of colours.
THOMAS MANNEKE
Thomas Maneke is a photographer who studies natural light. his work is described as 'still lifes of portraits' he has made a collection of silhouettes of his daughter and other portraits. With these amazing photographs Maneke has collaborated and made a book of all his photos.
Thomas Maneke creates his work in his studio in Amsterdam. His photographs focus on capturing still life. This image shows his daughter sitting on a window seal in the afternoon. Behind his daughter there are vines draped around the window, in a way the leaves make this photo look like its out of a fairy tale. I admire his work and how he makes the portraits and shapes pop. He uses the contrast of the grey scale to outline the shapes in most of his photos.
